History:
Springwood Hospital was opened in 1976 as a community based hospital. The community was and remains very active in supporting and raising funds for the hospital.
Overview:
All staff at the hospital are committed to providing a high level of quality care to the patients and welcomes visitors to the hospital. Springwood Hospital provides a diverse range of services such as day surgery, palliative care, rehabilitation and maintenance care.
Services include:
- Surgery (predominantly day only)
- Medical inpatient treatment predominantly level 2 including:
- Geriatric and Rehabilitation
- Palliative Care
- Physiotherapy, Social Work, Dietetics and Occupational Therapy provided to inpatients.
- Physiotherapy and Dietetics provided to outpatients.
Springwood Hospital has 32 beds, 6 of which are designated as day only surgery beds. The hospital is set on 4 acres of land, with landscaping around the main building.
Clinical Services:
A part-time Career Medical Officer is available on-site 5 days per week for Rehabilitation patients. Apart from this, Resident Medical Officer coverage is not available on-site at Springwood Hospital. The admitting Visiting Medical Officer cares for surgical patients and the General Practitioners care for medical patients.
Accident & Emergency
No Emergency Department service is available onsite. First aid treatment is

Surgery
Predominantly day only surgery is performed at Springwood Hospital. Patients
can also be transferred from other hospitals for their post-operative care.
The theatre is fully equipped for all general surgery, gynaecological surgery (including laparoscopy), Ear, Nose and Throat, and Urology surgery. No general laparoscopic surgery is undertaken.
Medicine
Patients are admitted with general medical conditions where no major
intervention is necessary: intravenous medical therapy is given where appropriate,
but patients who require frequent review are transferred.
No Pathology testing or X-Rays are done on site. Blood is collected from patients and couriered to Nepean Hospital or a private pathology service.
Patients who are appropriate may be accepted from other facilities within Sydney West Area Health Service to await nursing home placement if no Nursing Home beds are available.
Palliative Care
Local General Practitioners provide palliative care with input from a specialist team.
Services Available for Patients and Visitors:
Services available to patients are hairdressing, laundry, television, podiatry and telephone. An account for these services will be left with the patient or sent to a relative. A free 24-hour interpreter service is available upon request.
Services available to visitors are coffee, drinks and snack machines.
Accommodation:
The facility is made up of wards comprising 4 and 2 beds as well as single rooms. The placement of patients within the wards is dependent on the clinical needs of the individual patient.
Visiting hours are from 10am – 8pm, daily.
Transport, Parking, Access:
The hospital is wheelchair accessible and limited parking is available.
A bus service is available at the front of the hospital and visitors can contact a local taxi service as required.
