About the project
The Auburn community will benefit from a new $145.1 million redevelopment of Auburn Hospital. The project includes a new 184-bed main hospital building and community health facilities. The new hospital building will be complete by 2009.
The Auburn Hospital redevelopment is the fifth major metropolitan hospital project now underway in Sydney.
The new hospital
In Stage 1 of the redevelopment will deliver a new hospital building on the
existing site and new community health service facilities.
The new hospital will provide:
- 24-hour emergency care
- medical and surgical services
- maternity - including new birthing options such as midwifery-led service for low-risk births
- ambulatory paediatrics
- allied health and outpatients services.
The new hospital will develop as a centre of excellence for planned surgery, aged care and rehabilitation, with an increase in endoscopy procedures and general surgery with a focus on planned day surgery for adults.
Culture and community
The project includes a cultural and arts program which will enhance the design of the new facilities and provide an excellent opportunity for the wider community to be partners in the redevelopment of Auburn Health Services. The plan will recommend ways that the design can promote well-being, create a welcoming environment and reflect the beliefs and values of the local community.

Purpose-built design
The new five-storey hospital building has been designed to meet changing trends in healthcare with welcoming, patient-friendly environments and purpose-built treatment areas for new ambulatory and multi-disciplinary models of care.
“Clean and green”
The new hospital will also be environmentally friendly, with a ‘clean and green’ design which includes water recycling and innovations to reduce energy consumption. For instance, rainwater collected from roof areas will be used for toilet-flushing and watering garden areas.
Courtyards will maximise the use of natural light and improve the quality of indoor environments; high-efficiency lighting will be used where electric lighting is required.
External shading will reduce “solar heat gain”, thus reducing the need for air conditioning.
Business as usual at Auburn
Australian company Multiplex Constructions will design and build the new hospital, which is expected to be completed by 2009.
Some early works, to clear the site for construction, are already underway. This includes the relocation of some services to other locations on site, or to temporary buildings on the hospital grounds.
During the redevelopment, it will be 'business as usual' at Auburn Hospital. There will be no loss of services during the reconstruction, although there may be temporary changes to some services from time to time, to allow for essential building work.
Your safety on site
Auburn Hospital and Multiplex will work closely to ensure a “safety first” approach to environmental issues on site.
For your safety, please observe the safety signs around the site and follow any directions given by site staff. We appreciate your patience and cooperation.
