Welcome to the Westmead Trauma Centre Web Site

Westmead Hospital opened in 1978, with 975 beds, as a Specialised Tertiary Referral Hospital and Level I Trauma Centre for Greater Western Sydney, which has a population of over 2 million people and 15 local government areas. The Hospital includes a Dental School, Redbank House, a separate unit for emotionally disturbed children, a stand alone Brain Injury Facility and Careflight Helicopter Retrieval Services.

The Millenium Research Institute, Parramatta Coroners Court and a large Medical Library complement the extensive clinical services provided. There is also onsite accommodation for patients' relatives at Casuarina Lodge, as well as a number of commercial outlets and numerous multi-storey staff residential buildings accommodating 540 people. Patients are admitted by referral and through an extensive Emergency and Outpatients service.

The Hospital has staff recreational facilities with a Clubhouse on the oval, swimming pool and tennis courts.  Sharing our campus is the Major Paediatric Referral Hospital and Trauma Centre, the New South Wales Newborn and Paediatric Emergency Transport Service (NETS) and Cumberland Hospital, a facility for patients suffering mental illness.

The Hospital consists of:

Westmead Trauma Centre is one of  Australia's largest and busiest Trauma Centres with over 2200 admissions per year. Westmead is the busiest Major Trauma Centre in the Sydney Metropolitan Region and the third busiest in Australia. It has a well-established Trauma Registry with over 40,000 patients and a well organised system of trauma care.

Westmead Hospital has for over 25 years clearly proven its commitment to improving and advancing trauma care, both for the people of Western Sydney and farther afield by providing ongoing education with lectures, tutorials, conferences and support as a center for advice, referrals and transfers.

It provides all facets of trauma care encompassing the prehospital phase and triage, acute hospital care and  specialised  rehabilitation. It is now becoming a leader in Public and Community Education, promoting awareness of Trauma Management and Injury Prevention.
