Notifications
Under the NSW Public Health Act and Regulation (1991), general practitioners are required to notify the Public Health Unit of the following diseases which may be sexually transmitted:
- AIDS - Acute viral hepatitis - Syphilis
The Public Health Unit should be notified as soon as the diagnosis is made.
These conditions, plus the following sexually transmitted infections: gonorrhoea, chlamydia, chancroid, granulome inguinale and lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) are also notifiable by laboratories to the Public Health Unit. The Public Health Unit will contact GPs where necessary for additional clinical information on notifiable conditions.
It is a responsibility of GPs to inform patients with sexually transmitted infections of the risks of transmission, and to seek the assistance of the patient in identifying and informing possible contacts of the need for screening and treatment. GPs can request the assistance of the sexual health clinic in this task.
