Medical Psychology
Internship
The Department of Medical Psychology accept post-graduate internship placement from different accredited universities in Australia. Interns from University of Sydney, University of New South Wales, Macquarie University, Wollongong University, University of Western Sydney, University of New England and Charles Sturt University, are selected for placement in various specialised areas such as eating disorders, anxiety, depression programme, gynae- oncology, consultation-liaison, neuropsychology (Macquarie University students only), sexual health; child, adolescent & family [Redbank House], brain injury unit; and adult acute, rehab & community mental health. Placement is highly competitive and nomination is restricted through the respective university supervisors or placement coordinators only. Due to a large demand in placement and availability of supervisors, internship in specified services cannot always be guaranteed.
The department normally forwards a letter to the universities mid-year to announce the commencement of nomination for internship, with a selection process which includes an interview prior to acceptance of placement for the following year.
Basic Criteria
We expect that students have proper conditional registration with the NSW Psychologist Board. Also, insurance cover via the universities. Placement cannot commence until after a Health Department security check has been conducted either by the University or our department.
Overseas Students
The department may accept foreign students for placement depending on the available resources of the department at the time. If accepted a student will need to meet academic and clinical criteria and have provisional registration in Australia and undertake a security check similar to the abovementioned procedure. Students will need to provide written documents indicating that their institution will provide professional indemnity and all other insurance coverage for the full period of their placement. No local accommodation is provided.
Overseas students are not expected to receive any kind of remuneration during their placement nor are they to be provided with any kind of subsidy during their period of placement. In some instances, the department may allow overseas students as observers only.
