Services:
The Impulse Control Research Clinic provides a limited range of individual cognitive behavioural programs for disorders characterised by impulsive loss of control over behaviours. The defining features of impulsive behaviours are an emotional dependence on a recurrent activity that is associated with some pleasurable outcome, sense of gratification or leads to a reduction in tension that results in some harm to the individual or others. The aim of the program is to teach individual practical skills to control their drive and urge to carry out such behaviours. Techniques such as cognitive therapy, stimulus control, imaginal desensitisation and relapse prevention are used. The types of disorders treated include pathological gambling, compulsive sexual behaviours (paraphilia), hair-pulling (trichotillomania), fire-setting (pyromania), shoplifting (kleptomania) and explosive personality disorders.
Specific Programmes:
Individual and group cognitive behavioural programs for pathological gambling.
Research Projects Currently Underway:
- Exploring attitudes towards money among problem gamblers.
- Comparing changes in cognitive belief structures and physical arousal produced by cognitive therapy and imaginal desensitisation interventions.
- Exploring irrational beliefs in gamblers.
- Exploring the concept of binge gambling.
- Developing the pathways model of gambling.
