WHAT IS OLCEN?

WHAT IS OLCEN?

ON-LINE CLINICAL EDUCATION IN NURSING (OLCEN) WAS PILOTED AS POLCEN FOR CANCER NURSES STARTING IN MARCH 2006

OLCEN will be demonstrated at NSW Health Expo at Australian Technology Park 11-12th Oct 2007.

OLCEN combines new technologies and hand-held devices (i.e. multi-media with MP4/ video iPods which plug into TVs and chat forum) with contemporary approaches to health-service teaching, to provide a nurse-focused post-graduate cancer nursing curriculum (including radiotherapy (XRT) and ambulatory infusion services (AIS), designed to optimise patient care.

OLCEN was nominated for NSW Premier's Public Sector Awards (IT Category) 2006.

OLCEN sets a potential benchmark for delivering professional development and training to the entire healthcare workforce 24/7.

OLCEN is currently the first known program of its kind provided by a health service provider in NSW and perhaps Australia.

OLCEN directly addresses critical needs to meet shortfalls in the cancer nursing workforce NSW.

Within 11 months POLCEN produced a hospital-based 'flexible learning' resource. The OLCEN'07 website now contains over 80 hours of lectures servicing 16 post-graduate cancer nurses throughout NSW.

OLCEN serviced cancer nurses in NSW (i.e. Tweed Heads, Port Macquarie, Muswellbrook, Newcastle and Sydney) and OLCEN'07 has attracted 16 students enrollments including. rural nurses from Dubbo and further afield. Inquiries continue from local, interstate and overseas.

The OLCEN website delivers the cancer modules for the Graduate Certificate in Specialty Nursing (GCSN) which is accredited by the Higher Education Board (HEB) for 24 credit points at any university.

This is the first course in NSW for nurses who want to specialise in Radiotherapy (XRT) nursing. As well, the Ambulatory Infusion Services (AIS) elective prepares nurses for incoming service trends.

The OLCEN website includes the Iowa Project for standardised nursing language of Nursing Intervention Classifications (NIC) and Nursing Outcomes Classifications (NOC) to improve nursing care records and facilitate nursing research.

OLCEN assisted 9 cancer nurses, who were living throughout NSW (and often working rotating rosters including night duty), to complete their studies and graduate in February 2007 (See: Nurses Graduate 2006/7).

The pilot of OLCEN was called POLCEN was achieved by SWAHS in partnership with the Medical Faculty IT University of Sydney and NSW Dept of Commerce-Office of Information and Communication Technology.

OLCEN has lead the way towards developing 'flexible learning' strategic initiatives in SWAHS 2007-2011.
