Disability Related Improvements
Sydney West Area Health Service (SWAHS) is a participant in the Don’t DIS my ABILITY promotion to be held in conjunction with the International Day of People with Disability on 3rd December 2008. As part of its contribution to supporting this year’s theme of Dignity and Justice for All of Us, SWAHS is running two events.
Nepean Hospital Promotion
This promotion will be held at Nepean Hospital, on Wednesday 3 December 2008. Key community stakeholders have been invited to attend so that they may promote their services alongside internal stakeholders such as the carers group and other interested parties. These promotional activities will be supported by presentations by Nepean Hospital Units on improved practice approaches for people with disabilities. Stalls will be attended by the volunteers who will hand out promotional brochures and information for those groups who may not be able to attend on the day. The volunteers will also be holding a BBQ for staff and visitors will be able to purchase food and drinks.

SWAHS showcase of good practice
SWAHS has gathered examples of good practice showing innovation that has improved the appropriateness of its service delivery to individuals with a disability. These examples might show how a service has increased its adaptability to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities or their carers or how they have been particularly responsive to identified needs. These examples will be judged by an expert group comprising local disability providers and individuals with disabilities who have formed a consultative group to advise the Chief Executive of SWAHS on which examples best support the intent of “Dignity and Justice for All”. On 3 December, these preferred entries will be showcased and members of the public are welcome to attend to see them and talk to the staff.
